Tulip tile “Children of the Sea”

Tulip tile “Children of the Sea”

The decoration depicted on the tulip tile is based on the painting ‘Children of the Sea’ from Jozef Israëls. Jozef Israëls, an important artist from the The Hague School (1860-1890), first painted this subject in 1863. The depicted charming scene contains a message. The children of a fisherman, with their tattered rags and paltry toys, offer us a glimpse of their future. The eldest boys carries the weight of the family on his shoulders, and the little boat stands for the rigours of life at sea. It became enormously popular and the artist subsequently repeated it often.
